There has always been a distinct divide between the image that Jesus presented of God and how humans have created a different image. Whilst Jesus portrayed the image of God as pure love we have seen through the ages a human idea that God is an angry God who punishes. So often any losses on a battlefield were attributed to God punishing the Jews at times in their history. However, to be one of the most ridiculous versions of Christianity that history books gloss over are the Crusades in Europe, where Teutonic Knights fought other Europeans across Eastern and Northern European countries and victory was basically to kill all the men and then baptising the women so they could ‘marry’ them, rape and pillage might be a better description. The idea that ‘pagans’ (non-Christians) could be killed with God’s blessing is not what we are taught in schools. That is really sad.
